Introduction

The Kali Chalisa is a devotional hymn composed in praise of Goddess Kali. It enumerates her countless names, forms, and the ten Mahavidyas. Maa Kali is the primordial power — dark-complexioned, with eighteen arms, wearing a garland of skulls. She destroys the wicked and grants fearlessness to her devotees.

Significance

Reciting the Kali Chalisa removes fear, enemies, and troubles. It describes the slaying of Shumbha-Nishumbha, Raktabija, and Chanda-Munda. References to the fifty-two Shakti Peethas, Kamakhya, and Vindhyavasini make it particularly rich. It is especially auspicious during Navratri, on Amavasya (new moon), and on Tuesdays.

How to Recite

The Kali Chalisa is especially powerful when recited at night. Offer red flowers and vermilion before an image or murti of Maa Kali, light a lamp, and begin the recitation with devotion and fearlessness.
