Introduction

The Saraswati Chalisa is a devotional hymn composed in praise of Goddess Saraswati. This particular version is a Shakti-oriented composition that praises Saraswati as an aspect of Devi (the Supreme Goddess). While it opens with an invocation to Saraswati as the bestower of wisdom and strength, its body contains verses drawn from Devi Mahatmya themes — the slaying of Madhu-Kaitabha, Chanda-Munda, Raktabeeja, Shumbha-Nishumbha, and the role of the Goddess in Rama’s exile and Ravana’s destruction.

Significance

Reciting this chalisa bestows wisdom, strength, and learning. The hymn celebrates how great poets such as Valmiki, Kalidasa, Tulsidas, and Surdas attained their genius through the grace of the Mother. Daily recitation removes all troubles, frees the captive, blesses the childless, and ultimately grants liberation from worldly bondage.

How to Recite

Recite the Saraswati Chalisa in the morning after bathing and wearing clean clothes. Sit before an image or idol of Goddess Saraswati, offer white flowers, light incense and a lamp, present food offerings (naivedya), and begin the recitation with a focused and devoted mind.
