Introduction

The Krishna Chalisa is a devotional hymn composed in praise of Lord Sri Krishna. Attributed to the poet Sundardas, it describes Krishna’s divine childhood pastimes, the lifting of Govardhan, the subduing of Kaliya, the slaying of Kansa, the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, and his boundless grace upon devotees such as Sudama, Draupadi, and Mirabai.

Significance

Regular recitation of the Krishna Chalisa bestows spiritual strength, mental peace, and liberation from all of life’s troubles. It is considered especially auspicious on Janmashtami, Ekadashi, and Wednesdays. The closing doha promises the eight siddhis, nine treasures, and the four goals of human life to the devoted reciter.

How to Recite

Recite the Krishna Chalisa in the morning or evening after bathing, with a pure and focused mind. Sit before an image or idol of Sri Krishna, offer tulasi leaves and yellow flowers, light a ghee lamp, apply sandalwood paste, and begin the recitation with faith and devotion.
