Introduction

The Lakshmi Chalisa is a devotional hymn composed in praise of Goddess Sri Lakshmi. She is the divine consort and Shakti of Lord Vishnu, born from the churning of the Ocean of Milk. As the sovereign deity of wealth, prosperity, and auspiciousness, she accompanies Vishnu in every incarnation. This Chalisa recounts her emergence from the ocean, her devoted service to Vishnu across his avatars, and her boundless compassion for devotees.

Significance

Regular recitation of the Lakshmi Chalisa is believed to bring wealth, prosperity, and happiness into the home. Reciting it for forty consecutive days (a chalisa vrata) is held to bring special fulfilment. The hymn is considered especially auspicious on Diwali, Fridays, and Sharad Purnima (the full moon of autumn).

How to Recite

Recite the Lakshmi Chalisa on Fridays, in the morning or evening. Light a ghee lamp before an image or idol of Goddess Lakshmi, offer lotus flowers, and begin the recitation with a pure heart free from deceit and guile, as the text itself instructs.
