Significance

The recitation of the Ganesha Ashtottara Shatanamavali is a key element of Lord Ganesha's worship. Ganesha is invoked at the beginning of every auspicious occasion, puja, or ritual. With each name, a flower, durva grass, or modaka is traditionally offered.

When to Chant

On Chaturthi tithi, Ganesha Chaturthi, Sankashti Chaturthi, Vinayaka Chaturthi, or at the beginning of any auspicious undertaking. Chanting during the morning or evening hours is considered especially beneficial.

Sankalpa (Intention)

Take water in your right palm, state your name, gotra, the date, and your intention for performing this puja.

Dhyanam (Meditation)

(ध्यानम्)

Close your eyes and meditate upon Lord Ganesha seated on a lotus, holding modaka, ankusha, pasha, and blessing with abhaya mudra.

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभ। निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥

Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakotisamaprabha, Nirvighnam kuru me deva sarvakaryeshu sarvada.

Avahana (Invocation)

(आवाहनम्)

Invoke Lord Ganesha's presence with folded hands and offering flowers.

Asana (Seat)

(आसनम्)

Offer a symbolic seat (flowers or akshata on the puja plate) to the deity.

Bathe the Ganesha murti with water, milk, curd, honey, and ghee (Panchamrit). Durva grass may also be offered during abhisheka.

Offer a final prayer requesting the deity's blessings.

Perform aarti with a lit lamp, moving it in a circular motion.

Visarjana (Send-off)

(विसर्जनम्) Optional

Request the deity to return to their abode, with the promise that they remain in your heart.

ॐ श्रीगणेशाय नमः। यथास्थानं प्रतिष्ठापयामि।

If worshipping a permanent murti at home, visarjana is typically not performed.
