Introduction

A collection of the 108 sacred names of Lord Shiva. Each name reveals a specific quality, form, or divine play (lila) of Shiva. Chanting these names with devotion is believed to bestow the grace of Lord Shiva upon the devotee.

Significance

The recitation of Shiva Ashtottara Shatanamavali is a principal aspect of Lord Shiva's worship. This recitation is considered extremely important for Shiva devotees. While chanting each name, a flower or unbroken rice grain (akshata) is offered to the deity.

When to Chant

On Mondays, during Pradosha Kala, on Maha Shivaratri, during the month of Shravana, or on the occasion of any Shiva puja. Chanting during the morning or evening twilight hours is considered especially fruitful.

Sankalpa (Intention)

Take water in right palm, state your name, gotra, the date, and your intention for performing this puja.

Dhyanam (Meditation)

(ध्यानम्)

Close your eyes and meditate upon Lord Shiva seated in Padmasana on Mount Kailash, with Parvati by his side.

Avahana (Invocation)

(आवाहनम्)

Invoke Lord Shiva's presence with folded hands and offering flowers.

(आसनम्)

Offer a symbolic seat (pushpa/akshata on the puja plate) to the deity.

For Shiva puja, Abhisheka with Panchamrit or water is central. Bilva leaves are especially sacred.

(प्रार्थना)

Offer a final prayer requesting the deity's blessings.

Perform aarti with a lit lamp, moving it in a circular motion.

Pradakshina and Namaskara

Circumambulate the deity (or turn in place) and offer prostrations.

For Shivalinga, pradakshina is done in a special way — not crossing the abhisheka channel (jalhari).

Ask forgiveness for any errors in the puja procedure.

Visarjana (Send-off)

(विसर्जनम्) Optional

Request the deity to return to their abode, with the promise that they remain in your heart.

If worshipping a permanent murti/linga at home, visarjana is typically not performed.
